In today’s social media-driven world, Facebook is the primary way to keep in touch with friends, family and coworkers for many people. It’s how people catch up on each other’s lives, plan events, avoid forgetting birthdays, and share photographs of everything from weddings to pets to newborns. We’ve been doing these things for years, and with Facebook, it has become convenient and streamlined.
You can interact with your friends all in one place, whether they live next door or on the other side of the world. Instead of having to select details to share with them when you see each other, you can share your life with them! But before you can keep in touch with your friends across the world, you have to find them first! Here is how to find friends on Facebook:
1. Log into Facebook.
2. Find your way to Facebook’s search bar at the top of the page.
3. Type in your friend’s name or email, and make sure you have it spelled correctly.
If you misspell their name, you’re going to have a hard time finding their profile. Double check with your friend to make sure they aren’t going by a nickname on Facebook. It may seem silly to ask about their name, but it will save you a lot of frustration in the long run.
4. Hunt through the results of your search until you find the friend you are looking for.
If your friend has a particularly common name, like Jake or Anna, this might take a while. Hopefully, their profile picture is one that stands out and is easy to see. Pay close attention so you don’t accidentally scroll by your friend. When you get to the bottom of the page, you can click the Get More Results option to keep searching.
5. When you’ve found your friend’s profile, first: celebrate!
You have found the needle in the haystack. Check twice to make sure it’s really them (you don’t want to send some random person a friend request– unless you’re looking to make new friends!) before you do anything else.
6. Click Add Friend.
Your friend’s profile will have a button that says Add Friend towards the right of the page. Select this option to send them a friendship invitation, and if they accept it, you’ll be added to each other’s list of Facebook friends.
7. If you’re having a hard time finding friends, import your email contacts.
To do this, locate the Friends option towards the top of the page. This is not a word– it’s a small icon of two silhouettes from the neck up. Click on that. A menu will pop up featuring a list of friend requests and people you may know. Click Find Friends at the top right of this menu. When the page refreshes, you will see an Add Personal Contacts box on the right side of the page.
Select your provider, type in your email address, and click Find Friends. From there, follow the directions Facebook gives you! These will vary based on your email provider, so make sure you click the right one.
